NHS crisis management
The following is by no means an exhaustive list of the high profile crisis management issues handled by the M&M team over the years. A significant number of these issues resulted in news conferences, which we set up and managed, and were covered by national, and in some cases international, media:
- attempted murder by nurse of two elderly patients
- political involvement in the case of a patient whose operation was cancelled in the run up to the 2005 election (aka ‘Margaret Dixon’s Shoulder’).
- GMC ’fitness to practice’ hearings (Sally Clarke case and cot deaths)
- deaths of patients in hospital (acute and mental health facilities)
- suicides by patients and members of staff
- criminal charges of sexual and physical abuse of patients by staff
- fraud allegations and theft of property and equipment
- staff dismissals - at every level – for wrongdoing
- arrest of staff on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activity
- patient complaints about care and treatment
- violence against hospital staff
- organ retention issues
- bomb alerts
- gas leaks resulting in evacuation of patients and closure of A&E and other departments
- MRSA, C Difficile, meningitis, flu, salmonella and D&V outbreaks
- patients suspected of having, or diagnosed with, CJD, SARS,
HIV, TB – in some instances transmitted by healthcare staff - four external mental health inquiries
- three ombudsman’s inquiries
- Healthcare Commission inquiry
- Local Safeguarding Children Board inquiry.
